Reading the Smith chart
The Smith chart maps normalized impedance z = Z/Z0 onto the reflection-coefficient plane. Every point corresponds to a reflection coefficient Γ = (z−1)/(z+1). Concentric circles are constant resistance; the arcs crossing them are constant reactance (upper half = inductive, lower half = capacitive).
The center (Γ = 0) is a perfect match. Distance from the center gives |Γ|; VSWR and return loss follow directly. The quarter-wave transformer impedance shown is ZT = √(Z0·RL), valid for a resistive load.
