Resistor codes: through-hole (THT) and SMD

Through-hole resistors use color bands: the first two (or three) bands are digits, the next is the multiplier, and the last is tolerance (gold = ±5%, silver = ±10%) plus optionally temperature coefficient.

SMD resistors print a short code: 3-digit (472 = 47 × 10² = 4.7 kΩ), 4-digit (1002 = 10 kΩ), R-notation (4R7 = 4.7 Ω), or EIA-96 (two digits + one letter encoding 1% values).
