Resistor Combination & Standard Values

Series/parallel totals and nearest standard values.

R1 R2 series R1 R2 parallel series: R = R1+R2 · parallel: R = (R1·R2)/(R1+R2)

Values

Result

Rtot = 2.00 kΩ

Combining resistors

Series always adds: R = R1 + R2 (+ R3). Parallel is less than the smallest value: R = (R1·R2)/(R1+R2), or the product-over-sum for two; with three resistors use 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3.

Parallel is the classic way to synthesize a non-standard value from the E-series you have in the drawer — two 100 kΩ in parallel give 50 kΩ exactly.
