How to read a resistor

Resistors use colored bands to encode their value. The first bands are digits, the next is the multiplier (a power of ten), and the last band(s) are tolerance and temperature coefficient. For a 4-band resistor, the first two bands are digits, the third is the multiplier, and the fourth is the tolerance (gold = ±5%, silver = ±10%).

Example: red-red-orange-gold = 22 × 10³ Ω = 22 kΩ ±5%.
